I have not written a post for almost a month which it is quite unusual for me. My life has been quite hectic over the past weeks, but today I have finally found the time to share with you the story of a beautiful leather goods label: Ferdinand USA.
“Ferdinand is a small American brand based out of Seattle, Washington run by Dane and Bonnie Alderfer. Dane is the maker, and Bonnie is the mover and the shaker. We strive to design and execute the highest quality goods so people spend less time fixing things and more time smelling the flowers”.
I bumped into Ferdinand on Instagram. I was so impressed by their products, that I had to write them a message. Bonnie was so kind to send me some information about Ferdinand. Everything started in 2013, after she got married with Dane.
Dane went to school for clothing design and manufacturing in Seattle and worked for some big outdoors companies in the area. After some years, he got disenchanted with the corporate fashion world and decided to take a break. He opened a shoe store, starting, at same time, to design his own bags and backpacks.
Short time after, he created a leather brand called Ferdinand, named after the children’s story “The story of Ferdinand” by the American author Munro Leaf: a story that talks about nature and flowers, all concepts that are very important for Bonnie and Dane. They both like to live simply and holistically…“seek the quiet life and taking time to smell the flowers” is their motto.
All the products are designed and handmade, from the beginning to the end, by Dane in his small studio in Seattle. At the moment he focuses mainly on leather goods such as wallets, bags and backpacks, but he does not exclude to broaden the range into clothing, jackets and, eventually, denim (I can’t wait!!!).
All the materials are sourced by Dane. He uses only natural or recycled materials, leather, cotton, even old sails or army tents canvas, found locally or during his trips. Dane put a great effort to re-create the same level of quality as the goods of the pasts.
Bonnie and Dane sells their beautiful goods mostly locally at the Sunday Farmers market.
The collection is also available online and at some local boutiques in Seattle, such as Glasswing. I need to ask Bonnie who made the amazing pictures on their website which I highly recommend to visit!
